What we think

As much as we would like to be able to say that stories published last weekabout a Grand Prix in London are true, the sad fact is that the whole story is acomplete fabrication. There was once a project, probably five years ago, to look into the potential of a race in the dockland area. The idea was to build the circuit infrastructure into a new office development which was being planned at the time on the north side of the Royal Albert Dock. In the end the construction went ahead without an F1 track. The story about floating modules is wonderful - but daft. The costs in trying toretrofit the idea would be astronomical. This happens each year with street races in Monaco, Albert Park, Baku and Singapore, which are all temporary tracks. The one thing that they have in common is that they are all government-funded. In London, there is no public money available. There was also no mention of who would pay the race promotion fee thatFormula 1 requires each year from races around the world. A project such as
London would require a fee of at least $25 million a year, in addition to the costs to prepare the circuit. Formula 1 made no official comment on the story, not wishing to add fuel to thefire, but quietly pointed out that there have been no proposals and no discussions with anyone involved. It looks, on reflection, like someone trying to use the sport to create momentum to help fund a floating modular waterside park.
Silverstone is now doing very well and F1 seems content to stay there in the long term - which is something that we support wholeheartedly.
As to a London Grand Prix, perhaps the best quote is one that came from someone high up in the Formula 1 group. The only way we will see an F1 race in London, they said, “is if it goes past the gates of Buckingham Palace”.
And that’s not going to happen any time soon...
