What we think
If you are having sleepless nights and need a shove into the Land of Nod, we recommend the FIA Statutes as material designed to help you on your way. These explain what the FIA seeks to do. The primary aim is to maintain a worldwide organisation upholding the interests of its members in all international matters concerning automobile mobility and tourism and
motorsport.
Nowhere does it say that the Federation should campaign for a more polite world and slap the wrist of anyone who uses “bad language”. Is it the role of the FIA to decide what constitutes rude words?
Does an automobile federation that presides over a high-pressure sport really need to use its time and energy stopping competitors from expressing their feelings? When a driver smashes into a wall at high speed, is he not allowed an expletive or two? Surely, the FIA President understands the concept as he was once a driver and has been known to have his own occasional impacts with walls.
Given that the word that upsets the Federation has been part of the vernacular in large sections of society (including sports) in countries all over the world for many years,
it seems very odd to see why an automobile federation really needs to be crusading against what our America friends refer to as ‘potty mouths’. Especially when there are far more pressing problems to solve.
While promoting family values is undoubtedly a Good Thing, one has to put such matters into context. Does the FIA expected competitors to say “flip!” and ”bother!” if they crash. Or is it better to be real and say things that real people say?
Does the FIA really wish to be seen as being priggish and sanctimonious?
Remember too that the hugely successful F1 Drive to Survive, which has made F1 much more popular in recent years, has gained popularity because it shows what the sport is like behind the scenes and one can even argue that the colourful Günther Steiner has become one of the most popular stars in the sport because of his bad language.
Perhaps the FIA should focus more on motorsport problems and try to be a little less self-righteous.
